Summary of the Role
Join a large biotech pharmaceutical leader as an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager, supporting the safety programs at Cambridge, MA laboratories. You will lead contractor safety initiatives for facilities, labs, and construction projects, and act as a key partner in driving a culture of safety and compliance. This role serves as the EHS point of contact and expert for laboratory and contractor safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage contractor safety programs for Cambridge, MA location labs and facilities
- Review safe permits to work and contractor job hazard analyses for compliance
- Partner with service providers to enhance contractor safety programs and culture
- Establish safe work procedures for hazardous activities
- Provide expertise on EHS topics including LOTO, confined space entry, hot work, and machine guarding
- Serve as EHS point of contact for process development laboratories
- Collaborate to correct inspection findings and respond to incidents and emergencies
- Lead thorough incident investigations and implement corrective actions
- Conduct in-person contractor safety training and EHS assessments
- Analyze safety data trends to identify and control hazards, focusing on serious injury and fatality prevention
- Develop written EHS SOPs and guidance documents
- Participate in safety-related meetings and drive continuous improvement through metrics and audits
Required Experience & Skills
- Direct experience developing and reviewing OSHA-compliant Job Hazard Analyses for high hazard activities
- Strong interpersonal skills with experience coaching and conducting safety inspections
- Effective public speaking and training skills on safety topics
- Experience partnering with diverse staff and contractors to drive safety culture
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 years of experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry implementing industrial safety programs
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential
- Proven risk evaluation and assessment experience
- Strong construction and contractor safety expertise
- Ability to influence management and communicate effectively
- Excellent presentation skills
- Action-oriented and self-starting, with program development and project management strength
- Technical writing proficiency
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and other computer software systems
Top 3 Must Have Skills
1. Expertise developing and reviewing OSHA-compliant Job Hazard Analyses for high hazard activities
2. Strong interpersonal skills and coaching experience in safety job walks and on-the-spot guidance
3. Effective public speaker and safety trainer
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Lead contractor safety programs for site facilities, lab services, and construction projects
- Review and approve safety documentation submitted by contractors
- Engage in routine facilities walkthroughs and build a culture of psychological safety
- Develop safe work procedures and conduct EHS assessments for new or revised lab activities
- Investigate incidents, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous EHS program improvement
- Participate in site safety meetings and serve as a subject matter expert during lab safety inspections
Basic Qualifications
- Doctorate degree OR
- Master’s degree and 3 years of Operations or Manufacturing experience Or
- Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of Operations or Manufacturing experience Or
- Associate’s degree and 10 years of Operations or Manufacturing experience Or
- High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Operations or Manufacturing experience
