Compensation: $65/$73 per hour (based on experience)
Summary of the Role
Support the execution and advancement of EHSS programs for a large biotech pharmaceutical leader at Thousand Oaks and other sites. Coordinate change management, facilitate safety culture improvements, and provide technical guidance across process engineering and safety initiatives. Engage daily with engineers and process leaders to integrate safety and health requirements into all business processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Review process, equipment, material, or operational changes to ensure all EHSS requirements are met
- Serve as the primary EHSS representative on assigned projects and provide formal EHS Safety Engineering reviews at all phases
- Conduct regular assessments of process safety procedures, industrial safety practices, equipment, and operator training
- Provide EHS input on project documents such as process diagrams, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and design drawings
- Lead or serve as SME for complex or high-hazard risk assessments using methodologies such as What if, HAZOP, and FMEA
- Drive process improvements and support proactive changes at the site
- Implement and support technical safety programs as assigned
- Guide and train teams on machine safety, Lock Out/Tag Out, electrical safety, process safety management, and pressure safety
Required Experience & Skills
- Demonstrated EHSS leadership in manufacturing or laboratory environments
- Ability to lead diverse teams and influence management
- Experience supporting multiple projects/initiatives simultaneously, emphasizing quality and organization
- 5–7 years of pharmaceutical or biotech industry experience implementing industrial and safety programs
- Strong communication, technical writing, and presentation skills
- Program development and project management experience
- Expertise in risk assessment processes and design/project engineering
- Applied knowledge of EHS and process safety practices, engineering principles, and regulatory standards
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in safety, industrial hygiene, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, biology, or life sciences
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and/or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Engineering background with PE Certification
- Familiarity with pharma/biotech regulatory requirements
- Proficiency in project-specific software systems
- Strong leadership skills to influence stakeholders and achieve high safety standards

2. Strong understanding of design, project engineering experience, and risk assessment processes
3. Knowledge of regulations related to pharma/biotech operations; applied knowledge of EHS, process safety practices, engineering principles, and regulatory requirements
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Serve as EHSS lead for assigned projects, providing formal EHS Safety Engineering reviews at every project stage
- Conduct regular safety and process assessments, including evaluating operator training and equipment
- Review and contribute to project documentation (e.g. process diagrams, P&IDs, specifications, and drawings)
- Lead or advise on complex/high-hazard risk assessments using industry-standard techniques
- Drive improvements by proactively advancing process improvements and supporting technical safety programs
- Advise teams on a wide range of EHSS topics such as machine safety, Lock Out/Tag Out, electrical and process safety
Basic Qualifications
- Doctorate degree OR
- Master’s degree and 2 years of experience OR
- Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of experience OR
- Associate’s degree and 8 years of experience OR
- High school diploma / GED and 10 years of experience
