R&D Operations Manager

Location: Remote - Thousand Oaks, CA

Employment Type: Contingent Worker (Contract, W2)

Contract Length: 10 months (possible extension)

Compensation: $58/$65 per hour (based on experience)


Summary of the Role

Join a large biotech pharmaceutical leader’s R&D Business Operations team to drive budget planning and execution across critical R&D functions. In this role, you will facilitate the budgeting cycle, deliver analytics on spending and resource utilization, and act as a key liaison between operations, finance, and functional leaders. You will play a strategic part in continuous improvement and support key business initiatives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and facilitate annual budget planning and execution for multiple R&D functions
  • Analyze and report on spending trends and resource utilization
  • Partner with Strategic Planning and Operations Leads to collect, prioritize, and execute budget plans
  • Liaise with finance to deliver quarterly, year-end, and ad-hoc reports
  • Guide contract management on escalated procure-to-pay issues
  • Support analytics for functional and cross-functional initiatives
  • Present findings and recommendations to executive and VP/suite-level leadership
  • Drive process improvements and support business excellence initiatives

Required Experience & Skills

  • Demonstrated proficiency with data visualization tools
  • Strong executive presence and ability to communicate with leadership
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Experience managing budgets, projects, or functions
  • Proficient in Excel
  • Experience in procurement and financial analytics (SAP)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with financial reporting and forecasting
  • General knowledge of the drug development process and R&D business units
  • Proficiency with Tableau, Smartsheet, MS Teams, and MS Office suite
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Experience with SAP, Ariba, Anaplan
  • Ability to thrive in complex, matrixed environments and manage multiple priorities
  • Proven ability to influence and communicate organizational changes effectively
  • Proactive, quick learner with initiative

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee budget planning and execution for several R&D functions, perform analytics on spending trends and resource utilization, partner with operations and finance leaders, guide resolution of contract and procurement issues, and contribute to supporting analytics for business initiatives.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and 3 years of biotech/pharma-related business operations/financial analytics experience
  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of biotech/pharma-related business operations/financial analytics experience
